A junior high has each child for only three years. Our task is to make those the years in which a young person first dares to speak to the world — and finds the world answers back. 國中,只擁有每個孩子三年。我們的任務,是讓這三年,成為一個年輕人第一次敢於對世界開口、並且發現世界會回應他的那三年。

Our school stands in an unusual town. Taibao is named after the honorary title of a Qing admiral; it is the seat of the Chiayi County government; the high-speed rail and the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum both lie within it. Our students do not have to travel far to meet the wider world — it already arrives at their doorstep. What we owe them is the confidence, and the language, to meet it.

我們的學校,座落在一座不尋常的小鎮。太保以一位清代提督的榮銜命名;它是嘉義縣政府所在地;高鐵與故宮南院都在其中。我們的學生不必遠行,就能遇見更大的世界——世界早已抵達他們的門前。我們欠他們的,是去迎接它的自信,與語言。

That is why English at Taibao is not only a subject on the timetable. It is a student standing up at English Day to tell a story; it is a class welcoming guests from a sister school; it is a teacher, mid-career, going back to study so that mathematics or science can be carried in a second language too. Among the five powers our county names for every child — character, identity, water-safety, health, and English — we hold the last one close.

We will not promise that every child leaves us fluent. We promise something we can keep: that they leave us braver about opening their mouths, prouder of where they come from, and able to say to a visitor, in two languages, “Let me show you my town.”

We measure English by whether a student will say it out loud — to a judge, a guest, a stranger — not only by a test score.

Pride of Place 對家鄉的驕傲

A child who can introduce their own hometown owns it twice. We teach Taibao — its admiral, its museum, its gateway — in English as well as Chinese.

一個能介紹自己家鄉的孩子,那個地方便兩次屬於他。我們用英文、也用中文,教太保——它的提督、它的博物館、它的門戶。

Adults Who Keep Learning 不停止學習的大人

Our teachers train in bilingual teaching themselves. We will not ask of students what we are unwilling to do as adults: keep learning the second language.

我們的老師自己進修雙語教學。我們不會要求學生去做我們身為大人不願做的事:把第二語言,一直學下去。
